OGUN LG ELECTION: OSIBODU HARPS ON ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF ALL POLITICAL PARTIES

The Chairman of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), Babatunde Osibodu, has harped on the  need for all political parties in Ogun state to participate actively, campaign with all their strength ahead of the local government elections slated  for November 16.

Osibodu made the charge today (Monday) at a stakeholders' meeting held  with political parties at the commission's secretariat, oke-ilewo, Abeokuta, the state capital.

This was just as the commission announced the extension of political parties' primaries in the state to 16th September, 2024.

He noted that opposition parties did not participate  actively and campaign  in the 2021 elections, hence they lost in the exercise.

His words: "I want to urge you today to campaign with all your might, with all your power," Osibodu said. "If you accuse the electoral umpire without doing your best to win the election, you have accepted defeat before the contest."

He encouraged parties to put in effort to convince their electorate that they are better than their opponents and to bring out their supporters on election day.

Osibodu added "We are determined to conduct elections that are not just free and fair but are seen to be free and fair.

"But if you continue to say that only the ruling party has won in the past and therefore you will not contest or campaign, it will not change.

"You need to come out boldly without violence, do not be afraid of the security forces, bring your supporters out on election day, you will be protected and your vote will be protected, that's my guarantee to you."

He, therefore, said that the commission was not planning to extend the November 16 date of the LG elections, noting that all security apparatuses had been put in place to ensure a Violent-free polls.

Osibodu also advised parties to send their agents to polling units as votes will  be counted at the polling units, sign and verify by the parties agents.
