COWA Launches Green Initiative to Tackle Climate Change


The President of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi, on Monday ,launched the Adopt-A-School Campaign to promote environmental protection and address climate change in Nigeria. 

The initiative was unveiled at the Nigeria Customs School, Idiroko, Ogun State, with 250 students from five customs commands selected as Green Ambassadors .




She explained that 250 students drawn from five customs commands would be selected as Green Ambassadors to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices within their schools and host communities.

These young ambassadors are being encouraged to take simple yet impactful actions like planting trees, maintaining clean surroundings, and promoting responsible environmental practices. 

Mrs Adeniyi noted that communities worldwide are facing environmental challenges like flooding, rising temperatures, and plastic waste, threatening health, agriculture, and livelihoods.




The COWA President also announced the launch of the Green Water Sustainability Initiative, a national programme aimed at promoting environmental responsibility within customs communities and across the country.





Earlier in his address,the Acting Customs Controller of Ogun I Area Command, Comptroller Oladapo Afeni,pointed out that the Green Border Initiative aligned with national and global calls for environmental responsibility.


Comptroller Afeni added that the programme would also help to strengthen relationships between the Nigeria Customs Service and host communities along border areas.


He reaffirmed the commitment of the command to collaborate with COWA in advancing initiatives that would promote community welfare and environmental sustainability.





Highlights of the event were  lectures,Cultural displays,drama,tree planting within school's premises,and the decoration of selected students as Green Ambassadors, highlighting the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to environmental sustainability and community welfare.
