The federal government's fourth repatriation flight from South Africa has successfully landed at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.
The Air Peace flight, which arrived last night, brought home 282 Nigerian citizens, marking a total of 1,141 individuals repatriated since the evacuation efforts commenced on June 11. Reports indicate that over 1,000 Nigerians have expressed their desire to return home.
Prior to the flight's arrival last week, Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu urged Nigerians to seize the opportunity provided by the ongoing repatriation exercise. This announcement came amid reports of two additional Nigerian fatalities in South Africa, raising the official death toll connected to xenophobic violence to four, although some returnees have suggested that this number may be higher.
Despite an unofficial deadline set by South African rights organizations for undocumented migrants to leave the country by June 30, the repatriation flights have continued. Odumegwu-Ojukwu reassured citizens, stating that the federal government is committed to ensuring that everyone who wishes to return will have the opportunity to do so.
