ABEOKUTA, Officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Ogun Command, have arrested a woman, Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi, for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected cannabis into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta.
Sowunmi was arrested at about 1:33 p.m. on Friday during a routine security screening at the entrance of the custodial centre.
The suspect had reportedly arrived at the facility to visit an inmate, Dare Sowunmi, who is on death row.
According to a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Odukoya Owolola Olayinka, officers discovered a sachet of Milo beverage allegedly containing substances suspected to be cannabis.
The statement said the discovery was made during the routine screening of the suspect and her belongings.
The command said the incident underscored the vigilance of its personnel and their commitment to preventing prohibited items and illicit substances from entering custodial facilities.
Following her arrest, the suspect was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections, Ogun Command, Mr Abioye Kamoru Adesina, commended the officers for their alertness and professionalism.
Adesina reaffirmed the Service’s zero-tolerance policy toward drug trafficking and other criminal activities within correctional facilities.
He said custodial centres were established to promote the reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society.
The controller warned members of the public against attempting to compromise the security of correctional facilities by bringing prohibited items into the centres.
He said anyone found engaging in such acts would face the full consequences of the law.
The command urged visitors to comply with all security protocols and regulations guiding visits to custodial facilities.
