Young Woman Jumps Into Lagos Lagoon at Idumota, Rescued by Locals

A young woman on Tuesday reportedly plunged into the Lagos Lagoon around the Idumota area of Lagos Island, triggering panic among commuters, traders and other residents.

The incident, which occurred in the busy commercial district, drew a large crowd as passers-by and local rescuers rushed to the scene to save the woman.

Witnesses said the woman suddenly jumped into the lagoon for reasons yet to be ascertained.

She was, however, rescued alive by some local divers and good Samaritans, who pulled her from the water moments after the incident.

Some onlookers, who commended the rescuers for their swift intervention, appealed to the authorities to handle the matter with compassion.

According to them, the woman should not be treated as a criminal despite the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"Please don't hand her over to the police. She may end up in jail. Whatever happened to her, she is not supposed to take her own life. She needs help and support, not punishment," one of the witnesses said.

Another resident urged relevant government agencies and mental health professionals to provide the woman with the necessary counselling and psychosocial support.

As of the time of filing this report, officials of the relevant emergency response agencies had yet to issue a statement on the incident, while the identity of the woman and the circumstances that led to the attempted suicide remained unknown.

The incident caused a temporary commotion in the area, with many residents expressing shock and concern over the increasing reports of suicide attempts linked to emotional, financial and psychological challenges.
