THE Nigerian engineers have potentials to excel , if given opportunity, Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya, said Saturday.
The environmental expert said he had during his working career as Managing Director/CEO , Lagos Waste Mangement Authority( LAWMA )had to be convinced of their competence.
He said, " When l was overseeing Lagos Waste Management Authority ( LAWMA), there was need to construct a road to a special location for disposal of refuse."
" A foreign construction firm submitted a bid of N4b for the job. Even as the governor approved the award, l went ahead to mobilize Nigerian engineers to execute the project. Lo! and behold it was executed at the same level of quality, the foreign firm, would have done it, with just N500,000, one eight of the bid amount by a foreign firm to carry- out the job."
" There were other projects in which l got them to execute, which they did so well, that l cannot but be convinced of their competence.
The environment commissioner spoke in Abeokuta as a Guestspeaker on the theme- Engineering lnnovation For a more resilient World- at the inauguration of Engr lsmail Adetunji Adenuga as the 16th Chairman of Abeokuta Branch of the Nigerian society of Engineers and induction of new corporate members.
Oresanya also said that based on his working relationships with the President- elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, when he was Lagos State Governor, he had no doubt, in his mind that there would be more recognition for Nigerian engineers in preference over their foreign counterparts during his presidency.
The oath of office for Engr Ismail Adenuga as the 16th Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers Abeokuta Branch was administered by The National President, Engr. Tasiu Saad Gidari- Wudil represented by Engr Kole Afolami, the Chairman of Mowe Branch. The oath taking came immediately after the decoration with insignia of Office by his predecessor, Engr Dr Kolawole Olonade, the 15th Chairman.
The oath of office was thereafter administered by the Chairman , Engr Ismail Adetunji Adenuga on the other members of the executive committee.
In his acceptance speech he declared that his executive committee would welcome ideas that will bring progress to the society.
He promised to pursue with vigour the activities of the Branch that have been giving joy and are interesting to members.
He noted that after his election as Chairman on Thursday 29th July,2022, his executive committee had held a distinguish engineering lecture in honour of a past Chairman of the Branch Engr Muiz Adetunji Ogunfemi adding that such in honour of those who have made positive contributions was desirable.
He also intimated of the plan to hold 4th Annual Shina Egberoungbe Memorial Lecture in April 2023.
He expressed the desire for the acquisition of a bus for the Branch for which an appeal fund shall soon be launched and a dream for the upgrade of the Secretariat to an enviable standard. He appealed to members to identify and link up the society with sponsors for the execution of the projects.
He acknowledged the elders in the society, all of whom he had benefited from their professional experience.As he was reading out the names he broke down in tears at the mention of late Engr Waliu Mufutau who was killed by assassins very close to Adegbenro Polythecnic not long ago.
He acknowledged specially his boss in the Ministry of Environment, Late Engr Abayomi Folorunso Adesanya who encouraged him to write his professional examination and also ensured he registered with COREN.
He noted that he went through the tutelage of Engr Dr Olonade, twice in the eight years he had been in the Executive committee and for also working directly with Prof B.A. Adewunmi when he was the Chief Examiner of the Branch.He noted that the exposure would no doubt impact positively on his leadership capability
He also acknowledged Engr Prince Yemisi Shyllon and Engr Mrs Waheed Adekunjo of Funmi- Ayinke Nigeria Ltd for the sponsorship of the programme Engineering and You on OGTV, OGBC with the objective of inspiring secondary school pupils in the study of science and engineering.
He appealed to corporate organisations and individuals to join hands in the sponsorship as there was a plan to start awarding scholarship.
The Chairman declared his determination to pursue with Vigour, young Engineers innovation competition, initiated by Engr Yemisi Shyllon,to which Engr Professor Oluwatoyin Ashiru had pledged support and collaboration.
The beneficiaries of the award at the event included Engr Prince Yemisi Shyllon, Engr Ade Akinsanya,Ogun State Commissioner for Works and infrastructure; Engr Gbenga Dairo, Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation.
Others were Engr Akeem Adesina, Special Adviser to Ogun State Governor on Works and infrastructure; Engr Dr Lateef Yusuf,Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and infrastructure; Engr Jonathan Onojobi and Engr Chief Oludayo Aderinwale, MD/CEO, Struchmatics Engineering Company.
The newly inducted as corporate members were Adeyemi ldris Adewole, Bello Ayomide, Damilola Samuel, lkumapayi Emmanuel and Kalejaiye Shakirullah Olanrewaju.
Others were Fagbohun Damilola Bolarinwa, Olorunfunmilakin Olumide Akinsanmi, Basiru Kabiru Alabi, Ademola Ahmed Mayowa, llugbo Oluwatobi Israel and Mesaiyeto Ayodele Jude.
The overall best three secondary schools that emerged in the science quiz competition by the society in the year 2022, presented prizes were Aminat International College, Gbonagun, Obantoko,Abeokuta, Omolayo Solaja Memorial Comprehensive High School, Abeokuta and Peace Foundation Academy, Quarry Road, Abeokuta.
Among family members and guests that witnessed the event included Dr Taiwo Jolaoso, Dr Oluwasegun Adeleye, Dr Adetokunbo Oduloju, Dr Oluwaseun Afolabi, Dr Olumayowa Durosinmi.
