This Boxing day in Boxing history

 



Jack Johnson  was born  March 31st 1878 Galveston  Texas USA. 

Fought in an Era  when the Colour of your skin rather than your ability dictated matters. 

 In fact he became so successful that many of the top white fighters  ran scared drawing the so called " Colour line "  and refused to engaged him in boxing contest.  

Jack Johnson  chased World Heavyweight Champion Canadian born Tommy Burns  the shortest fighter ever at 5ft 7inches  to became World Heavyweight Champion  half way around the World. 

1908 when Tommy Burns went on a World tour Jack Johnson followed in hot pursuit and eventually Tommy Burns relented to  Jack Johnson  pressure and both engaged in  World Heavyweight Championship fight in Sydney Australia on Boxing Day December 26 th 1908.  Tommy Burns real name  Noah Brusso  who captured coveted World Heavyweight boxing title February 23rd 1906 at Los Angeles when outpointed Marvin Hart over gruelling 20 rounds  successfully defended his title eleven times   before met American born Jack Johnson  who displayed awesome punching power and finesse toyed with the smaller Champion and taunting him throughout the Championship fight the police halted the classic contest in the 14th rounds and Jack Johnson was declared the winner and with the achievement became the first Black fighter ever to captured coveted World Heavyweight boxing title. 

Jackson arrogant manner and controversial lifestyle earned reputation as the most controversial boxer of all-time  and one of the most unpopular figures  in the United States. Jack Johnson fought fought untill he was past  50 years and right up untill his death in a  ghastly motor accident in  Raleigh North Carolina USA at age of 68 years  he was still still giving exhibitions.

 Jack Johnson will forever be remembered as one of the explosive and toughest Heavyweight fighter ever to be crowned as World Heavyweight Champion.

Today December 26th 2023  marking  115 years Jack Johnson became first Black fighter to won Heavyweight title.
