The need for Nigerians to imbibe and display the right attitude at work, home and in the society at large has been identified as the foundation for a developed and orderly society.
Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), reiterated this on Thursday, even as he noted that President Bola Tinubu is set to unveil a national value charter as a strategic step towards rebuilding Nigeria.
Mallam Issa-Onilu made this known during a media appearance on Radio Kwara 99.1 FM Ilorin, while speaking to Nigerians on various national issues and on the ongoing rebranding effort by NOA to reposition the nation.
The NOA DG explained that the intent of the national value charter was to reawaken the forgotten core values and norms as well as revive the patriotic spirit of all Nigerians.
“As at today, we don’t have a definitive statement on who a Nigerian is, even though we have a national anthem and other symbols. The charter therefore, is an agreement between citizens and government that would define rights and duties of a true Nigerian", he said.
Onilu reiterated that the decadence in the country needs to be solved in an holistic manner rather than trading blame, and this is the narrative NOA is changing through the ethical re-orientation and citizens’ mobilization.
He noted that in the few months of his assumption of office, efforts have been redoubled to ensure that NOA no longer winks in the dark or claps with one hand and the Agency now has a Television and Radio Studio, database of critical stakeholders in the society among other things that will help its reorientation task.
Onilu therefore charged Nigerians to await the launch of the National Values Charter by the President reiterating that it will be to the Nigerian what the ‘American Dream’ is to an American or what other countries’ ethos are to the citizens of the country.
