The National Rescue Mission (NRM), a leading opposition party in Ogun State, has rejected the outcome of last Saturday’s by-election in Remo Federal Constituency, describing the victory of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as “unfortunate” and “a political rape.”
Speaking on the development, the Ogun State Chairman of the party, Hon. Olujobi Fayoyin, accused the APC of capitalizing on the low voter turnout to manipulate the process. He alleged that the election was marred by violence across the three local government areas that make up the constituency, leaving many voters too intimidated to exercise their civic rights.
According to Fayoyin, security operatives on duty were either overwhelmed or complicit, allowing the APC to conduct what he described as a “kangaroo election.” He lamented the erosion of public trust in both the electoral system and the judiciary, stressing that Nigerians could no longer rely on the courts as the last hope of the common man.
Ruling out the possibility of approaching the election tribunal, Fayoyin said the process would amount to a waste of time and resources. He also criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying it had failed to live up to expectations, while calling for urgent and genuine electoral reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Despite his disappointment, Fayoyin urged NRM members not to lose hope but to see the setback as an opportunity to restrategize. He called on the party faithful to close ranks and build a stronger front ahead of the 2027 general elections with the determination to challenge the ruling party at the polls.
