Footballers nabbed with illicit drugs Worth US$75,000

 




Former Zimbabwe Warriors forward Abbas Amidu has been arrested in a major drug bust. The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the footballer was taken into custody alongside another former player Rueben Mhlanga for allegedly trafficking a large quantity of marijuana.






The arrest occurred on the Kwekwe to Kadoma Highway on 3 October 2025. According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the two men were found with a massive haul of cannabis in their vehicle.


A Significant Haul On The Highway

The police operation led to the discovery of 750kg of dagga, a local term for cannabis. The drugs were found inside a silver Honda Shuttle. The Zimbabwe Republic Police stated the seizure had an estimated street value of US$75,000 (approximately R1.4 million).


In a post on X, the police authority provided specific details of the arrest. They wrote:


“The ZRP confirms the arrest of soccer players, Tumai Matsika, also known as Abas Amidu (29) and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga (41) for drug trafficking. The two were found in possession of 750kg of dagga valued at USD75 000-00 in a silver Honda Shuttle vehicle, registration number AGP 6776"
