A young man, Onoja Joseph, has recounted his harrowing experience of escaping from k!dnappers in Kabba, Kogi State. Joseph was travelling in an 18-seater bus from Owo to Abuja for his SIWES (Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme) when the incident occurred.
"I was coming from Owo to Abuja for my SIWES. We were inside an 18-seater bus when the incident happened. We were marched into the bush. For 3 hours, we crossed different types of rivers. We crossed like 7 rivers," Joseph narrated.
He explained that he escaped by hiding in a bush when he saw it getting dark. "How I escaped was that when I saw everywhere getting dark, I managed to hide myself inside a bush. When I later came out, I saw 3 men in a village and I thought I was safe."
However, the men, who spoke the Kabba language, were in contact with the k!dnappers and intended to hand him over. Joseph managed to deceive them and escaped. "They asked where I was coming from and then started calling the bandits, asking them why they allowed someone to escape from the operation. They were speaking the Kabba language, but I understood a little of it because I could speak Yoruba."
Joseph's account highlights the dangers of travelling on Nigerian roads and the bravery of those who manage to escape from k!dnappers.
