Journalists have been charged to play a more informed and accountable role in reporting police reforms in Nigeria, as reforms within the policing system continue to evolve amid lingering gaps in coordination and responsibility.
This call was made by the facilitator, Mr. Odoh Diego Okenyodo, during a one-day capacity-building workshop for journalists in Ogun State, organised by the Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative (RLEI).
Okenyodo said while notable changes are taking place within the Nigeria Police Force, poor understanding between journalists and police reform authorities has resulted in superficial reporting that neither strengthens the reform process nor effectively holds institutions to account.
According to him, the workshop was designed with a dual objective: to empower journalists with deeper knowledge of ongoing police reforms, and to create a dialogue platform between the police authorities and the media to foster mutual understanding.
He explained that police reform is a multidisciplinary process, involving actors at different levels, law reform, institutional restructuring, and accountability mechanisms, noting that this fragmentation often creates a situation where no single body appears directly responsible.
The Chairman of Ogun NUJ, Comrade Olawale Olanrewaju appreciated the organisers, describing the programme as an opportunity for journalists to further explore their skills in the area of police reform reporting.
