Ogun State House of Assembly today played host to former Speakers and members at a Special Plenary, with messages of congratulations to Governor Dapo Abiodun on the State golden jubilee celebration, describing the milestone as a reflection of sustenance of good governance, democratic stability and infrastructural developments that have put the State ahead of its contemporaries in the comity of States in the country.
Those who spoke at the Special plenary held at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, were past Speakers, including Rt. Hon. Suraju Ishola Adekunbi, Rt. Hon. Titi Oseni, Rt. Hon. Muyiwa Oladipo and Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, congratulated the Governor, Speaker Oludaisi Elemide, the State lawmakers and people of the State.
They noted that the State had witnessed remarkable development in industrial growth, education, revenue generation and overall economic performance; commending the former and current legislators for sustaining democratic principles and maintaining legislative stability through the promotion of mutual interdependence to advance developments in all parts of the State.
They acknowledged the contributions of heroes past including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Chief M.K.O. Abiola, as well as past governors, legislators, civil servants and other statesmen in the development of the State.
They also celebrated the achievements of the State indigenes in education, arts and entertainment, innovation, politics and business, describing the strides recorded in the last fifty years as a testament to the resilience and strength of the State.
On their part, former members that attended the plenary such as Honourables Dipo Akingbade, a former Majority Leader Chief Bode Adeaga, Olufemi Allen-Taylor, Mrs. Olakemi Juliana Akintayo and Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, in their goodwill messages, thanked God, the Governor and the people of the State for the privilege to serve the State in their respective tenures; while congratulating the Government and people of the State on the 50th anniversary.
The former lawmakers commended the visible developments recorded by the State since its creation in 1979 in areas such as population growth, economic expansion and infrastructural development.
They appreciated the Speaker for the invitation to the special plenary and praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for the upgrade of the Assembly Complex to a modern legislative complex.
The former legislators called for full financial autonomy for the legislative arm; while stressing the need to give room for continuity/ multiple terms for lawmakers to garner experience in legislative activities to further enhance quality representation and the creation of more constituencies to reflect population growth.
In their remarks, serving members of the Assembly including the Majority Leader Yusuf Sherif, Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye, as well as Honourables Adebisi Oyedele, Damilola Soneye, Samsideen Lawal and Wahab Haruna expressed gratitude to God, the Governor and their constituents for the opportunity to serve.
They congratulated Governor Abiodun, the Speaker and the people of the State, positing that the Governor’s achievements including road construction, renovation of public facilities, the Gateway International Airport projects and the upgrade of the Assembly Complex were legacy projects that deserved commendation.
They also called for increased infrastructural development and full financial autonomy for the legislative arm.
Responding, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for the mutual collaboration with the legislative arm which had led to the strides recorded in the last seven years.
The Speaker specifically lauded the Governor for approving and facilitating the renovation, redesigning and upgrading of the Assembly Complex, describing the intervention as critical to improving legislative efficiency and institutional capacity.
He further appreciated the Governor’s approval for the facilitation of constituency projects to the tune of N150m per constituency for all the 26 State Constituencies; while reiterating the need for enhanced legislative autonomy to strengthen democratic governance and effective service delivery in the State.
