Court Backs Elemide as Ogun Assembly Speaker, Oluomo's Appeal Crashes

The Court of Appeal in Ibadan has issued a decisive judgment affirming the position of Rt. Hon. Daisi Olusegun Victor Elemide  as the rightful Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly. The appellate court rejected the appeal filed by the impeached former Speaker, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, thereby solidifying Elemide's authority after the contentious impeachment proceedings.

This verdict concludes a protracted legal battle stemming from Oluomo's impeachment in January 2024 by a majority of the Assembly members. The removal was based on allegations of financial impropriety, including embezzlement of funds, authoritarian conduct, gross misconduct, and related infractions. Following the impeachment, the House swiftly elected and inaugurated Rt. Hon. Elemide as the new Speaker to ensure continuity in legislative operations.

The Appeal Court's ruling in Ibadan validates the actions taken by the Ogun State House of Assembly members, emphasizing the constitutional propriety of the impeachment process. It dispels any lingering doubts about the leadership transition and enables the Assembly to focus on its core responsibilities without the shadow of ongoing litigation.

This outcome represents a substantial triumph for Speaker Elemide and the incumbent leadership team, reinforcing stability and governance within the Ogun State legislative body.
