A Nigerian-born Hausa leader, Alhaji Sirajo Jankado, popularly known as Sarkin Hausawan Turai (Emir of Hausas in Europe), has made history by defeating seven French candidates to win a councillor seat in the Palaiseau district near Paris, France.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa, Jankado revealed that he was personally invited by the mayoral candidate of the area to contest for the councillor position in his ward. He secured victory with 51% of the votes cast. He noted that this year’s local elections recorded a significant increase in the number of Black African candidates, with many winning councillor and mayoral seats across France, including 12 mayoral positions won by Black candidates in the Paris region alone.
Jankado explained that the role of a councillor in France is very important as it serves as the direct link between citizens and the government. Duties include handling birth certificates, housing issues, school admissions, road maintenance, and community security. After being sworn in, his immediate priority will be debating the local budget and addressing complaints raised by residents during the campaign.
He pledged to use his position to encourage more young Black Africans living in Europe to actively participate in politics. The term for both mayors and councillors in France is six years. See more of his pictures in the comment section.
