Sony AI's table tennis robot, dubbed "Ace," has made history by beating elite and professional players, showcasing significant advances in real-time sensing and control. Ace uses nine high-speed cameras to track the ball's 3D position and additional event-based sensors to capture spin and angular velocity in real-time. This allows it to adapt during play using reinforcement learning, making flexible responses to unpredictable shots possible.
Ace's capabilities include:
- High-Speed Tracking: Captures the ball's position and spin with exceptional accuracy
- Real-Time Adaptation: Adjusts shots in milliseconds to counter opponents
- Precision Movement: Uses high-speed actuators for precise racket control.
In tests, Ace won three out of five matches against elite players and delivered competitive performances against professionals, handling spins up to 450 rad/s with over 75% return rates .
Sony AI's table tennis robot, Ace, is produced in Japan.
