Former House of Representatives member, representing Remo/Ikenne/ Sagamu federal Constituency, the Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State for the 2027 election.
Adebutu was declared the winner following an affirmation election conducted across 236 wards in the state’s 20 local government areas. The formal declaration took place on Sunday at the Abeokuta Sports Club in Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta, where party members reaffirmed his candidature as the standard bearer.
The Chairman of the Ogun PDP Governorship Primary Committee, Chief Ariyo Afolabi, said elections were held earlier in the day in all 236 wards across the 20 LGAs. He explained that the gathering at the venue was convened to collate the results and officially declare the winner.
“According to the Electoral Act and the PDP Constitution, Hon. Ladi Adebutu was the sole aspirant screened by the party,” Afolabi stated. “He has emerged as the candidate by consensus, and he is hereby elected as the PDP candidate.”
In his remarks, the State Chairman of the PDP, Hon. Abayomi Tella, described the day as a moment for skeptics to accept that the party remains strong in Ogun.
“This is not a time for talk, but a time for action. There is a reason God has stabilized this PDP,” Tella said. “I remember in our past contests, there was hardly a time we did not have squabbles. But this time around, to God be the glory.”
Party officials said the consensus selection was aimed at presenting a united front ahead of the 2027 governorship election. They added that the exercise was conducted peacefully and in line with party guidelines.
With the affirmation, Adebutu is set to lead the PDP’s charge to reclaim Ogun State after previously contesting the governorship in 2019 and 2023.
In his acceptance ,Adebutu thanked party leaders, stakeholders, and members for endorsing him as the PDP flag bearer. He said the outcome reflected the commitment of party members to peaceful conduct and internal cohesion.
“History has once again been made today with my emergence as the consensus governorship candidate of our great party under a united PDP, I extend my deep appreciation to you all, our leaders, executive members at all levels, stakeholders, and members of our party for being unequivocal in your decision.”
Adebutu urged all PDP members in Ogun to maintain peaceful coexistence, describing it as the only assurance for sustaining the party’s progress. He said the party had operated within the ambience of peaceful conduct, which brought it to the point of presenting a consensus candidate.
The former House of Representatives member accused the All Progressives Congress of keeping Ogun State under siege for over 15 years under different nomenclatures, while residents struggled with hardship despite the state’s abundant natural and human resources.
“Dear party compatriots, the APC has been in government in Ogun State for over a decade and a half, holding our dear state under siege while our people groan under hardship,” he said. “Whereas we live in abundance and surplus, and have been blessed with both natural and human resources, we are denied the benefits.”
Adebutu recalled that PDP recorded strong support in the 2023 election, which he said was won by the party before votes were allegedly manipulated. He expressed confidence that in 2027, the votes would count and secure his victory.
“However, this time in 2027, I believe in God that your votes will count and will put me in office as your duly elected governor, I therefore extend my appeal to every member of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State to focus on reclaiming Ogun State from the hands of the clueless APC government and its allies.” he stated.
Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose who was also present, congratulated Adebutu and called on party members in the state to stay committed, insisting that Adebutu deserves nothing less than the governorship.
