Ogun Young Progressives Party has told Nigerians that democracy must move beyond ceremonies, saying 27 years after 1999, millions still lack food, jobs and safety.
In a statement on Friday to mark June 12 Democracy Day, Ogun YPP Chairman Hon. Adeyemi Oluwaseyifunmi, aka ASO, congratulated citizens at home and abroad for keeping faith with democracy since the annulled 1993 election.
But he warned that “the dividends of democracy have not met the expectations of most citizens”.
The pain points, according to YPP:
Hunger and high costs: Rising food prices, transport fares and electricity tariffs have forced families to choose between meals, health care and school fees.
Joblessness: Youth unemployment remains high, leaving a generation “vulnerable and frustrated”.
Fear everywhere: Banditry, insurgency, robbery and kidnapping for ransom persist nationwide. School abductions have turned classrooms into danger zones and made highways unsafe for farmers and commuters.
YPP’s demands on Democracy Day
“Democracy Day should not be reduced to ceremonies. It must be a day of honest assessment,” he said
The party listed three urgent actions:
Pass State Police now: YPP urged the National Assembly to fast-track all State Police Bills. “Security is local, and the response must be local,” the chairman said. A regulated, community-driven police structure, he argued, is key to stopping kidnapping and banditry.
Feed and employ Nigerians: Expand transparent cash/food support for poor households and invest in agriculture, rural roads, cold storage and vocational training to cut food costs and create jobs.
Save our schools: Implement Safe Schools with fencing, emergency alerts and community watch teams. “No child should choose between education and safety,” he stated.
“We stand with all Nigerians calling for a nation where democratic governance translates to real improvements in daily life,” the statement concluded.
