ABEOKUTA — A political advocacy group in Ogun State on Monday accused opponents of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola of reviving questions about his state of origin to undermine his rising political profile ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The convener of the Intellectual Forum, Hon.Wale Bello, disclosed this at a news conference in Abeokuta that the renewed debate over Adeola's indigene status was politically motivated and reflected growing concern among rivals over the senator's popularity across the state.
Adeola, widely known as Yayi, has been chosen as the 2027 Ogun governorship candidste.
Bello said similar allegations had been made against former Ogun governors Olusegun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel before they were widely accepted as indigenes of the state.
He said Osoba was once accused of not being an Egba indigene until it was established that he hailed from Ago-Oba in Egbaland, while Daniel also faced claims that he was from Delta State, allegations Bello said were later dismissed.
"The opposition is afraid of the overwhelming support Senator Olamilekan Adeola enjoys among the masses," Bello said. "They are afraid of defeat, and they are worried about his growing popularity across Ogun State."
He urged political actors to shift attention from what he described as divisive narratives to issues of governance and development.
Bello also called on those behind the campaign questioning Adeola's origin to stop what he described as unnecessary distractions, saying voters would ultimately decide the state's next governor based on competence, leadership and service.
He said the Intellectual Forum would continue to advocate issue-based politics and oppose attempts to divert public attention from governance and development..
