…Senator Inspects Other Projects, Says Education, ICT Key to Nigeria’s Future
ABEOKUTA — The Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Abeokuta (FUMMSA), has commended the Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, FNCS, for his intervention in the development of the institution, particularly the completion of an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre at its permanent site.
The commendation came during an inspection visit by Senator Salisu and his team to the university, where the Senator inspected the newly completed ICT Centre as well as other ongoing and completed building projects at the permanent site.
The ICT Centre, facilitated through Senator Salisu’s intervention, has emerged as the first completed building at FUMMSA’s permanent site, barely two years after the university commenced operations.
The visit began at the university’s temporary campus at No. 31, Central Avenue, Kemta Estate, Idi Aba, Ajebo Road, Abeokuta, before the delegation proceeded to the permanent site for an inspection of the ICT Centre and other infrastructural projects.
The FUMMSA Governing Council, led by its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Usman Mohammad Shanawa, alongside the university management and other stakeholders, received the Senator and his delegation.
Shanawa: Salisu’s Intervention Significant to FUMMSA
Speaking during the inspection, Dr. Shanawa expressed the council’s appreciation to Senator Salisu for supporting the university at a critical stage of its development.
He described the completion of the ICT Centre as a major milestone, particularly because it represents the first building at the institution’s permanent site.

The Pro-Chancellor said the facility would contribute significantly to the university’s digital learning, medical education, research and innovation programmes.
He called for sustained collaboration between the institution, the National Assembly and the Federal Government to accelerate the development of the permanent site.
Salisu: Education Changed My Life
Speaking during the visit, Senator Salisu said his decision to prioritise education and ICT-related interventions was informed by his personal experience and belief in the transformative power of education.
He said education had provided the foundation for his own development and remained one of the most effective tools for empowering young Nigerians.
“The only reason why I became what I am today is because I am educated. Education changed my life, and that is why I believe strongly that we must continue to invest in education, technology and opportunities for our young people.”
The Senator, who chairs the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, said the ICT Centre was conceived to support digital education and provide students and researchers with the technological infrastructure required to compete in a rapidly changing world.
According to him, ICT is no longer an optional component of education but a fundamental requirement for modern learning, research and innovation.
“We are in an era where ICT is no longer optional. It is central to education, research and development. For a university that is focused on medicine and medical sciences, providing the right digital infrastructure is extremely important.”
He added that the development of FUMMSA was important not only to Ogun Central but to the wider healthcare sector, given the institution’s mandate to train medical professionals and advance research.
DVC: FUMMSA Appreciates Senator’s Commitment
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Fatiu Abiola Arogundade, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Adebola Ogunbiyi, commended Senator Salisu for the intervention.
Prof. Ogunbiyi also praised the Governing Council and management for the progress recorded by the university within its relatively short period of operation.
She said the Senator’s background in computer science and technology made his understanding of the importance of digital infrastructure particularly valuable to FUMMSA.
She noted that access to modern ICT facilities would enhance teaching, research and medical education at the institution.
The DVC assured Senator Salisu that the university would maximise the opportunity provided by the intervention and continue to build on the foundation already laid.
Salisu Inspects Other Projects at Permanent Site
Beyond the ICT Centre, Senator Salisu and his delegation inspected other building projects and facilities at the university’s permanent site.
The inspection enabled the Senator to assess the level of infrastructural development taking place barely two years after the university commenced operations.
It also provided an opportunity for the Senator and the university management to discuss areas requiring further legislative and infrastructural intervention as FUMMSA continues to expand.
The engagement further strengthened the relationship between the institution and the National Assembly, with the university leadership highlighting the importance of continued partnerships in developing the permanent site.

FUMMSA is a specialised federal institution in Ogun State established to train healthcare professionals, advance medical education and promote research and innovation in the health sector.
The completion of the ICT Centre, alongside other ongoing projects at the permanent site, represents a significant milestone in FUMMSA’s development and underscores Senator Salisu’s stated commitment to using legislative interventions to support education, technology and infrastructural development across Ogun Central.
