Daniel Dubois delivered a ruthless second-round destruction of Fabio Wardley to successfully defend his WBO World Heavyweight championship, forcing Wardley’s corner to throw in the towel to save their fighter from further damage.
The 27-year-old Londoner, who improved his professional record to 24-3 with 23 knockouts, wasted no time imposing his physical dominance from the opening bell.
Dubois caught Wardley with a heavy right cross early in the second round, visibly rocking the challenger before following up with a ferocious barrage of unanswered power shots. Realising the imminent danger, Wardley’s corner threw in the white towel at 2:15 of round two, prompting the referee to immediately call a halt to the contest.
The defeat marks the second loss of Wardley’s professional career (20-2-1, 19 KOs), bringing an abrupt end to his hopes of capturing world honors.
In their previous bout, Wardley had pushed Dubois to the absolute brink in a brutal 12-round war. That contest saw Dubois drop Wardley early, only for Wardley to roar back, trapping Dubois against the ropes and scoring a heavy knockdown of his own in the middle rounds. While Dubois ultimately edged out a razor-thin split decision to retain his strap on that occasion, critics and pundits questioned whether he possessed the fortitude to handle Wardley’s relentless pressure in a rematch.
However, Dubois extinguished all doubts in the return fixture, showing marked tactical improvements under the direction of his coaching staff. Rather than engaging in another wild slugfest, Dubois utilized a sharp jab to set up devastating power combinations, leaving Wardley with no answer before the corner stepped in.
The emphatic nature of Saturday’s victory served as a dramatic contrast to the grueling, controversial initial encounter between both men.
