Nigeria’s Young Boxer Heads to Dakar for Youth Olympic Games

Mayowa Ayomide to compete in women’s 48kg category as boxing begins November 7

Nigeria’s boxing representative, Mayowa Ayomide, has departed the country for Senegal ahead of the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games, where she will compete in the women’s 48kg category.
Ayomide is part of Team Nigeria’s contingent for the Games, scheduled to hold in Dakar from October 31 to November 13, bringing together young athletes from across the world to compete in multiple sporting disciplines.

She will be accompanied by boxing coach Tonye Agedah, who is expected to guide her through the competition as she seeks to make an impression on the international stage.
Boxing events at the Games are scheduled to take place from November 7 to 12 at the Dakar Expo Centre, giving the Nigerian boxer time to complete accreditation and familiarise herself with the competition environment before the opening of her event.

The Dakar Games will be the first Olympic sporting event hosted on African soil, marking a historic moment for the continent and providing a platform for emerging athletes to showcase their talents.
Nigeria will compete in six sports at the Games: athletics, boxing, road cycling, swimming, table tennis and beach volleyball. The country's delegation comprises 19 athletes, with athletics accounting for the largest share of the team.

The Nigerian contingent underwent a 21-day preparation camp in Abuja from October 9 to 29. The programme included medical screening, anti-doping education, technical and tactical training, kit fitting and travel arrangements.
The National Sports Commission said the preparations were designed to equip the athletes for the demands of international competition and provide them with valuable experience for future elite sporting events.
For Ayomide, the competition represents an opportunity to test her ability against some of the world's promising young boxers while flying Nigeria's flag at a landmark edition of the Youth Olympic Games.
The Games will conclude on November 13, with the closing ceremony scheduled to take place at the Diamniadio Olympic Stadium.
