...Beneficiaries express gratitude, say gesture brings relief to Fijabi community
The people of Fijabi community in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State have commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, and NIMA Memorial Foundation Care for donating clothing, footwear and other relief materials to residents.
The beneficiaries expressed their appreciation on Friday during a humanitarian outreach organised by the Ogun NUJ in collaboration with the foundation as part of activities marking the union’s 50th anniversary.
Speaking at the event, the Ogun NUJ Chairman, Wale Olanrewaju, said the outreach was part of the union’s commitment to giving back to society and appreciating individuals who had supported its activities over the years.
He specifically acknowledged the contributions of the Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Senator Shuaibu Afolabi Salisu, for his consistent support for journalists.
He said, “We have only come to give back to Odeda Local Government from the little that God has given us, and also because of Senator Shuaibu Afolabi Salisu. This is a form of appreciation because he has been standing with and supporting us.”
Olanrewaju explained that the donated items included clothes for children and adults, shoes, bags, dolls and games, adding that the materials were new and imported from abroad through the foundation.
“We didn't bring you used clothes. Everything you see here was newly shipped from abroad by NIMA Foundation,” he said.
He added that blankets, pillows and diapers were also provided for people with special needs, including bedridden residents, stroke patients and those experiencing bedwetting.
The founder of NIMA Memorial Foundation Care, Alhaja Zainab Muhammad Abdul Malik, also addressed the beneficiaries, offered prayers for the community and distributed cash gifts to some residents.
In his remarks, the councillor representing Opeji Ward and Leader of the House in Odeda Local Government, Hon. Rotimi Adeyemi, expressed appreciation to the NUJ and the foundation on behalf of the people of Fijabi and Odeda, saying the gesture had brought excitement to the community.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr Durojaye David, said the intervention had brought happiness to residents despite their economic challenges.
He said, “Though we are hungry, seeing this, we are happy and agile. We will have clothes to wear. Happiness does not surpass this.”
Other beneficiaries also commended the organisers for remembering the community, praying for God's continued blessings and financial prosperity for the NUJ and NIMA Memorial Foundation Care.
As part of activities marking its 50th anniversary, the Council, led by its Chairman, also observed Jumat prayers at Fijabi Muslim Community Central Mosque in Odeda Local Government Area.
The Chief Imam of the mosque, in his sermon, offered prayers for the council, its leadership and members, seeking God’s continued guidance, protection, unity and prosperity for the union
