…  unveils week-long activities for Golden Jubilee landmark

The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has announced plans for a week-long series of activities to mark its 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades of media practice in the ancient city of Abeokuta, widely regarded as the birthplace of Nigerian journalism.
The Golden Jubilee celebrations are scheduled to hold from Monday, October 26 to Sunday, November 1, 2026.
According to details made available by the Chairman of the Ogun State NUJ Council, Akinwale Olanrewaju, the anniversary is themed: “Truth, Trust and the Press – Protecting Democratic Choice and Rebuilding Public Confidence in Journalism”.
Speaking on the anniversary, Olanrewaju noted that the state council, established in 1976, prides itself as the "cradle of journalism" in Nigeria and is set to celebrate the landmark event in a memorable style.
The week-long line-up of activities will kick off on Monday, October 26, with a grand opening and flag-off ceremony at the NUJ Permanent Site at 11:00 am. The day will feature an Inter-Chapel Sports and Games Competition, capped by a friendly novelty football match between the NUJ Football Club and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Football Club at 4:00 pm.
On Tuesday, October 27, members of the union will take to the streets for a “Jubilee Walk for Press Freedom”, taking off from the Iwe Irohin Press Centre at 7:00 am. The day will also feature activities commemorating the NAWOJ Day, organized by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists.
Entertainment and cultural expressions will take center stage on Wednesday, October 28, with a Jubilee Music Concert and Chapel Variety Day at the Iwe Irohin complex.
Intellectual discussions and infrastructure recognition will highlight Thursday, October 29, featuring an Anniversary Lecture, the official commissioning of Golden Jubilee legacy projects, and a Veterans’ Night honoring senior and retired media practitioners at 12:00 noon.
The union will extend its celebrations to the community on Friday, October 30, through a village outreach program in Opeji at 7:00 am, followed by a Thanksgiving Juma’at Service at 1:00 pm.
The week-long celebration will climax on Saturday, October 31, with a Grand Finale and Awards Ceremony scheduled for 12:00 noon at the Telemedicine Hall of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.
The Golden Jubilee festivities will formally draw to a close on Sunday, November 1, with a Church Thanksgiving Service at V.L.B.C., Abeokuta, at 8:00 am.
