Renowned communication scholar Idowu Sobowale dies at 85

Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, a renowned communication scholar, veteran journalist and former lecturer, has died at the age of 85.
Sobowale died on Thursday morning, October 8, 2026, according to a statement by a member of his family, Akinniyi Sowunmi.
Sowunmi, in a statement titled “Transition to Glory,” described the death as a major loss to Nigeria’s communication community, particularly the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals in Nigeria.
The statement said, “Our father, Pa Deacon Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, OON, 85, joined the saints triumphant this morning, October 8, 2026.”
Sobowale was widely regarded as a pioneer and influential figure in Nigerian journalism and communication scholarship. He was a former lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos and a founding figure in the development of communication studies at Lagos State University.
He was also a distinguished journalist who had worked with the Daily Times before moving into academia, where he became known for mentoring generations of journalists, communication scholars and media professionals.
The late professor was described as a “teacher of teachers” and was recognised for his contributions to journalism, mass communication and education.
He also contributed articles and commentaries to the Nigerian media, including Vanguard, where his writings and reflections on journalism and communication were published.
His death comes a little over five years after he celebrated his 80th birthday, when colleagues and former students paid tribute to his contributions to journalism and communication education in Nigeria.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
