Former Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, has criticized the Ogun State Government over the prolonged delay in the payment of entitlements to retired local government workers.
Obasanjo, who spoke during a consultative meeting with the Local Government Pensioners Association of Nigeria, Abeokuta South and North chapters, stated that the current stipends and delayed entitlements under the present administration were insufficient for retirees to afford a decent living after decades of public service.
Assuring the retirees of a policy shift, the Peoples Democratic Party senatorial candidate pledged that the party’s governorship candidate, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, would prioritize pensioners' welfare, prompt gratuity releases, and healthcare access if elected into office.
"Pension funds meant for retired workers should not be withheld under any guise. Pensioners deserve to enjoy the fruits of their labor while they are still alive and healthy, not when they are gone," Obasanjo declared.
Clarifying her decision to re-enter active politics after serving as a state commissioner and senator, Obasanjo stated that her return was driven by public demand and a commitment to transparent resource management.
"My decision to contest is driven by a strong desire to serve the people and not for personal financial gains, unlike others. Public resources and allocations due to our state must be effectively utilized for the benefit of the people and their well-being in all ramifications," she added.
Speaking on behalf of the association, the LOGPAN Chairman for Abeokuta South and North, Alhaji Sulaimon Gbolagade Popoola, decried the current recruitment and welfare trends in the state, contrasting them with Obasanjo's tenure as Health Commissioner.
Popoola commended her past track record, noting that her administration prioritized merit, transparency, and empathy over political connections, particularly within the state's healthcare sector.
He maintained that the association’s members would align with leadership that demonstrates accountability and genuine concern for the plight of senior citizens.
