Twenty-five years after the death of the Doyen of One-Man Band in Ogun State, Late Dipo Sodipo, popularly known as Pope, the "Dipo Sodipo Lives On" initiative celebrated the late musician with an awareness tour around the city of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Saturday.
Speaking with journalists during the awareness tour, the Coordinator of the "Dipo Sodipo Lives On" initiative, Mr. Fela Coker, stated that the late Pope was an enigmatic and creative musician who popularized one-man band music in Ogun State, especially in the city of Abeokuta.
He described Late Pope as a doyen of one-man band music.
"We are remembering him 25 years after his death for the massive loss that we suffered. So, we are creating much more awareness in the city of Abeokuta about his significant contributions to the cultural and entertainment industry in Ogun State, particularly in Abeokuta," Coker said.
Coker, who described Pope as a native of Abeokuta, characterized him as a creative musician and one of the pioneers of one-man band music.
"He was one of those who started the one-man band concept, where he played with one or two keyboards. Pope created music in a way that encompassed all the instruments, giving his music its originality."
"We believe Pope is a hero. He may have been an unsung hero while he was alive, but it will be on record that we appreciate his contributions to the culture and music industry."
"We are trying to propagate the fact that we miss his contributions culturally and to society. The objective of this initiative is to ensure that 'Pope lives on,'" he concluded.
Pope died on 19th of August, 2000 at the age of 46 years.
