China has a large landmass but just about 32% of the land is not soaring mountains, dizzy valleys and twisting crags. China doesn't really have land and it is one real problem China has and it is also a reason the country cannot produce all of its food and have to rely on importation.
China decided to boldly traverse these mountains with breathtaking bridges. They look good and they wow observers and sure solve problems.
But the type of dyke-like mountains you have in China are usually geologically active and when you see some of those really tall bridges like this Hongqi bridge, you wonder if they can last. Apart from earthquakes there are more regular geological activities that can take down bridges or at least sections there of .. Landslides and mass flows are examples and a bridge with exceptionally long spans and tall piers can suffer disproportionately when they get struck by these common mass movements on the surface of the earth's crust. The Chinese experiment with these 'impossible' bridges may end up being a lesson for everyone as time goes on.
