The Controller of Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Command 1, Comptroller Bamidele Makinde has commended Monarchs in the Ogun west senatorial district of state for their cooperation towards eradication of smuggling in the state.
Makinde gave the commendation on Tuesday 11, 2023 ,while briefing newsman on the feat attained by the service within the first six months in the year 2023.
He disclosed further that the Monarchs were among those being engaged to talk the youth in the axis to disengage and not to engage in smuggling.
He said ' Although, Many of the youths are unemployed , but that does not warrant them to engage in illegal and unlawful means of livehood.
“We have been meeting the traditional rulers to assist talk to the youths , and they have been doing this very well and you cannot find any of the Monarchs engaging in smuggling or aiding smugglers, I have not seen one! He stated
Makinde disclosed that the sum of N93,301,130.000 was generated as revenue within the first six months of 2023 , surpassing the N29,940,146.50 of which is 310 percent higher than amount generated in the first six months.
The Controller said 392 items of contraband were seized; "We seized 5048 used tyres,390 bale's of used clothes, 71 motors,5 articulated vehicles,173,975 litre of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), illicit drugs, bags of rice and other smuggled goods.
" We were able to achieve these feats with the cooperation of Corporation organization, all round state surveillance and investigation, steadfastness and determination of the officers, adding that synergies with sister agencies also played a significant role in attaining the success.
He also said ’’ let me remind you , gentleman of the Press, during our last briefing,I made mentioned that NSC under the auspices of the Customs Officers Wives(COWA), launched Nursery and Primary schools, I am happy to inform you that the work has commenced in earnest in this direction.
The Controller also used the occasion to felicitate the newly appointed Comptroller General of Customs, AB Adeniyi on his appointment, adding that without doubt,he is assured that the new CG will perform creditably,make positive turn around, impact and success of the position.
