The Coalition of Stakeholders in Education has appealed to the federal Government to urgently reverse the invalidation on degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo from 2017 till date to save alumni members and Nigerian students affected by the ban from traumatic situations.
This was the summation at the international news conference organised by Coalition of Stakeholders in Education,CSE, on the invalidation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo from 2017 till date.
The call for urgent reversal was held on Tuesday at the International Press Conference,Ogba, Lagos State.
Addressing Journalists, One of the Coalition members,Mark Uba said" This is the Coalition of Stakeholders in Education.We are here to state and appeal that the ban on Benin Republic and Togo certificates should be reversed.
" We are here to update the public about the recent ban on the two countries' certificates by the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria. We, as a body had observed a lot of discrepancies in the honourable minister's speech compared to information at our disposal; the Minister's prouncement of the revalidation of certificates to take effect in retrospect is something surprising and unjustifieable.Is it that the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria has been deceiving Nigerian students all these years?
" If schools are not accredited, the ministry, the federal government of Benin Republic won't bring it out,and you can come and check. This is for 2024,2025 which is this new academic session coming. This is for 2022/2023. This is for 2019 in the past.
"So, if we are looking into this , how would federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria said we don't have modified accredited universities?
In his speech, the President of Nigerian Lecturers in Benin Republic, Gabriel konan called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently look into the matter to assist already traumatized students, parents and stakeholders from deprivation confronting them based on the pronouncement of Nigeria's federal Ministry of Education.
" We will like to ask what happened to the monies paid by these students for their evaluation.while would Ministry of Education give evaluations to graduates, so called fake graduates now in the first place,? spanning over a period of seven years and so we are compelled to ask if diligent students who studied hard to acquire their degree certificates from these countries should suffer from crimes of neglible few?
" The beleaguering crises bedeviling the educational system in Africa is unfortunately much and must be treated accordingly and holistically and not in retrospect ". He added
Also speaking, the Director of IUB University, Benin Republic, Sanni Shittu, who expressed surprise on the ban of the degree certificates said there is need for Federal Ministry of Education of Nigeria to sanitize the system by investigating schools involved while resolving the issue through the diplomatic channel to protect the students studying in abroad.
"The documents are website on the platform and everybody can have access to . Now, when they can to Benin Republic,early this year, they met some stakeholders; Institutes directors. They also visited some schools. They went to Ministry of Higher Education in Benin Republic and from our source, they have been giving these documents we are talking about. We don't understand how abd today they are telling us schools are not accredited .I can only talk about Benin Republic because I am not in Togo, but I am very sure what is happening in Benin, is the same thing happening in Togo".
Stakeholders including Parents, Lecturers ,Students also said that studying abroad and acquiring certificates from the two countries not as costly and those who studied in the two countries are doing well in their endeavors.
