The Ogun State Police Command on Thursday said it has launched an investigation into the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, serving in Abeokuta South Local Government, who was alleged to have died as a result of complications from abortion.
It was gathered that Ariyo had allegedly terminated her pregnancy and died from complications that followed the procedure.
Her remains were reportedly buried at Kobape Cemetery on the Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
Ariyo’s death was said to be coming barely a month after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, died in what has been described as mysterious circumstances.
Adeleye, who was also serving under the same Abeokuta South LG, was said to be observing her one-year mandatory service to fatherland in a television station in the state capital before her sudden death.
Both deceased corps members were said to be friends.
A source who spoke to our Correspondent said, “The first lady, Mary, died at her residence, which is not far from her PPA. They found her lifeless body in the apartment, up till now, nobody can tell the cause of her death.
Newslife gathered that the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South, Abass Olalekan, has been arrested by the police in connection with the incident, which occurred in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital.
According to preliminary findings obtain, Olalekan is alleged to have been romantically involved with Ariyo, a relationship said to have resulted in a pregnancy. The pregnancy was reportedly terminated, leading to complications that ultimately claimed her life.
A Police source confirmed that the NYSC official is currently in detention at the Ogun State Police Command headquarters in Eleweran as investigations intensify.
When contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough probe. However, he declined to comment on the arrest of the NYSC official or the specifics of the allegations.
As of the time of filing this report, the NYSC in Ogun State has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. Efforts by Global Mirror News to reach relevant officials for comments were unsuccessful.
The incident has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for accountability, as well as stronger safeguards to protect corps members serving across the Country.
