The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a man identified as John Cosmos Govi over an alleged high level robbery operation involving the drugging of his employer, destruction of security systems, and theft of luxury valuables worth about N150 million inside a residence in Abuja.
According to police authorities, the suspect reportedly secured employment as a private chef after plotting the operation with two accomplices identified simply as Peter and Moses, who are currently on the run.
Investigators revealed that Govi, who reportedly trained at a catering school in Cotonou, Benin Republic, carefully studied the movement patterns, daily routine, and security structure of the residence before carrying out the operation on April 23, 2026.
Police said the suspect laced food prepared inside the residence with a suspected sedative substance aimed at incapacitating occupants and security personnel within the house.
After the victims reportedly became weak from the substance, the suspect allowed his accomplices into the residence, where the gang vandalized the CCTV system, searched the apartment, and carted away expensive items including cash and about 20 luxury wristwatches valued at approximately N150 million.
The shocking incident has triggered reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over rising cases of insider crimes involving domestic staff and trusted employees.
Police spokesperson ACP Anthony Placid confirmed that operatives of the Force Intelligence Department Intelligence Response Team later intercepted the suspect while he was attempting to flee through the Gwagwalada axis on his way to Lagos.
During the arrest operation, police recovered an iPhone 17 Pro Max said to belong to the victim, alongside a suspected chemical substance believed to have been used in the operation. The substance has reportedly been sent for forensic analysis.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to track down the fleeing accomplices linked to the robbery.
