The governorship candidate of the National Rescue Mission (NRM) in Ogun State, Hon. Olujobi Fayoyin, has called on the Ogun State Government to strengthen security measures following the abduction of teachers and schoolchildren in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
Fayoyin described the incident as alarming and warned that neighbouring states, particularly Ogun, must not ignore the growing threat posed by kidnappers and other criminal elements.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the opposition politician said the attack on the school community should serve as a wake-up call for authorities to intensify efforts toward protecting lives and property.
According to him, the increasing cases of kidnappings, attacks on rural communities and other violent crimes across the country reflect the inability of governments at different levels to adequately address security challenges.
“The kidnap of innocent teachers and young schoolchildren is heartbreaking and unacceptable. It is a direct attack on the future of our nation and should concern every responsible leader,” Fayoyin stated.
The NRM candidate also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party of prioritising political interests above the safety and welfare of citizens.
He lamented that many Nigerians now live in fear as insecurity continues to spread across communities, affecting education, farming and other economic activities.
“Our nation is bleeding while those in power appear more concerned about retaining office. Communities are no longer safe, farmers cannot freely access their farmlands, and parents now worry about the safety of their children even in schools,” he said.
Fayoyin urged the Ogun State Government to enhance intelligence gathering, strengthen community policing initiatives and improve surveillance around schools, border communities and other vulnerable locations.
He further called on traditional rulers, religious leaders and community stakeholders to collaborate with security agencies in identifying and tackling criminal activities before they escalate.
The governorship hopeful also encouraged Nigerians to hold public office holders accountable, stressing that leadership must be measured by its ability to guarantee security and improve the welfare of citizens.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the NRM to providing leadership focused on restoring public confidence, improving security and promoting economic growth across the country.
