Ogun community summit urges residents to reject vote-selling ahead of elections

 

 ILESE,   --  A local development council in Ogun State is shifting its focus from registration drives alone to tackling vote-buying, as it launched a summit ,on Saturday to increase political participation in Ilese and nearby towns.

The Ilese Development Council, or IDC, convened community leaders, youth groups, women’s associations, electoral officials and security agencies under the theme “Register Today: Decide Tomorrow.” Organizers said the goal was to convert registration numbers into actual turnout and credible elections.

INEC’s Ogun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Feyijimi Saseyi Ibiyemi, said voter registration remains the foundation of democracy. Represented by Joseph Omotiloye, head of operations at the Independent National Electoral Commission, she urged eligible residents to register and collect their Permanent Voter Cards.

IDC Chairman Asiwaju Kunle Kalejaye told participants that the ballot is the most direct tool citizens have to hold leaders accountable. He warned residents against selling their votes, calling the practice a threat to good governance.

“The vote is your power to enforce and demand good governance,” Kalejaye said. “Do not mortgage your future by selling your vote. Choose leaders based on competence, integrity, and their commitment to serving the people.”

Security officials also addressed the gathering. Ogun State Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni, represented by Ijebu Area Commander ACP Yusuf A. Wasiu, pledged police protection for voters, INEC staff and election materials. He urged residents not to be deterred by fear or intimidation.

The summit included training on registration procedures, PVC safety and the dangers of electoral violence. Community leaders said they will now mobilize across Ilese to ensure residents register, collect their cards and vote without inducement.
