ABEOKUTA — The Progressive Muslim Congress has opposed government rehabilitation programs for bandits. The group said Islam prescribes stricter measures for terrorism than reintegration.
This was stated on Tuesday during a world press conference in Abeokuta to commemorate 1448 Hijri, the Muslim New Year. The event held at Nuj Hall, iwe irohin, Oke ilewo, Abeokuta.
Addressing journalists, President of Progressive Muslim Clerics, Alhaji AbdWasiu Akinyemi, said government may consider rehabilitation due to Nigeria’s system. He added that from an Islamic perspective, sharia law does not support reintegrating bandits and terrorists into society.
Akinyemi emphasised that in a sharia-based system, the approach to such cases would differ from rehabilitation. He noted Nigeria is a secular country, so government’s position leans toward reintegration.
He stressed that crime is not tied to tribe. Rather, he said it is a general menace affecting all Nigerians regardless of tribe or religion.
He therefore urged the federal government to find lasting solutions to the insecurity situation in the country.
