Residents Raise Alarm Over Collapsing Ijeja Road, Seek Urgent Government Intervention

Residents and motorists plying the Ijeja Road linking Oke Sokori rbridge in Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South local government areas have appealed to the Ogun State Government to urgently repair a collapsing section of the road before it results in a major tragedy.

The affected residents, who spoke with Newslife Community Reporter, expressed concern that the damaged portion of the road has continued to widen following repeated flooding, creating a deep gully that now poses a serious danger to motorists, commercial motorcyclists, pedestrians and schoolchildren who use the route daily.

One of the residents, Uztaz Wasiu Hussain, attributed the damage to erosion caused by floodwaters, saying the situation has deteriorated in recent months.

He called on the Ogun State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to intervene immediately to prevent further destruction of the road.

According to him, apart from the collapsing section, several potholes have taken over the road, forcing motorists and commercial motorcyclists to make dangerous maneuvers to avoid them.

"The road is becoming increasingly dangerous. Commercial motorcyclists often swerve to avoid the potholes and this has led to several near-misses and clashes with pedestrians. We appeal to the government to repair the road before lives are lost," he said.

Also speaking, Mrs. Fausat Okeola recounted her experience at the damaged section, saying she narrowly escaped being pushed into the gully by a commercial motorcyclist who was trying to avoid a pothole.

She described the road as a death trap and urged the relevant authorities to carry out immediate repairs to safeguard lives and property.

Residents said the road serves several communities and warned that delaying intervention could lead to avoidable accidents, especially during the peak of the rainy season. They appealed to the state government to treat the repair of the road as a matter of urgency.
