A surviving suspected illegal miner detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State has recounted how some detainees allegedly collapsed after an unidentified substance was sprayed inside their cell.

The survivor spoke during the visit of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to the NSCDC detention facility in Minna on Friday, following the deaths of dozens of suspected illegal miners in custody.

“They sprayed something in the cell after putting us inside, and people started falling down,” the survivor said.

The account formed part of the testimonies being gathered as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The victims were among suspected illegal miners arrested during enforcement operations in the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas of Minna on September 15 and 16.

At least 33 detainees were reported to have died while in custody, although other reports put the number at 37.

The NSCDC had said the detainees died following what was suspected to be a disease outbreak, but the exact cause of death had not been medically established.

The victims’ bodies were taken to the Minna General Hospital, where medical examinations are expected to assist investigators in determining the cause of the deaths.

The survivor’s allegation about the unidentified substance could not independently be verified, and authorities are expected to establish whether it played any role in the deaths.

Tunji-Ojo, during his visit, ordered an investigation into the incident and suspended the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, pending the outcome of the probe.

The minister said the government would establish what happened and ensure that anyone found responsible was held accountable.

The incident has generated tension in Minna, with residents and relatives of the deceased demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The investigation is expected to examine the conditions under which the suspects were detained, the medical attention provided to them and events preceding their collapse and deaths.
