The race for the chairmanship of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria in Ogun State has gathered momentum, with three members of the association expressing interest in succeeding the incumbent chairman, Comrade Akibu Efele.
Efele, who hails from the Ijebu axis of the state, is expected to round off his tenure later this year, paving the way for a fresh leadership contest within the transport employers’ association.
Those currently jostling for the position include Olu-Mowe-based traditional ruler, His Royal Majesty Oriyomi Yayah; Comrade Olusegun Jolaoso, popularly known as Olokun; and the current state secretary of the association, Comrade K.Olajumoke. Akingbade, popularly known as Paulo Rossi,from Abeokuta.
The emergence of the three aspirants has heightened political activities within the association, as stakeholders and members are expected to begin consultations ahead of the election.
Yayah, who has a strong presence in the Olu-Mowe axis, is among those believed to be seeking the support of members across the state as the contest gradually gathers momentum.
Jolaoso, popularly known as Olokun, is also expected to rely on his experience and relationships within the transport sector to prosecute his bid for the chairmanship.
Akinbade, the incumbent state secretary, is another prominent contender in the race. His position as secretary has placed him at the centre of the association’s administrative activities and is expected to form part of his campaign appeal to members.
With Efele’s tenure expected to end before the close of the year, attention is now shifting to how the election will be conducted and who will emerge as his successor. The contest is expected to generate further interest among RTEAN members across Ogun as the election date draws closer.
