Customs changes hands in Ogun as Afeni takes Lagos enforcement unit

The Nigeria Customs Service has reshuffled leadership in two of its key commands, with Deputy Comptroller O.O. Afeni handing over the Ogun I Area Command before taking charge of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’ in Lagos.
Afeni transferred command of Ogun I to Deputy Comptroller A.A. Ibrahim on Wednesday after 10 months at the helm, during which the command reported gains in revenue collection, anti-smuggling operations and export trade.
The command generated ₦896.5 million between January and August 2026, exceeding its revenue target of ₦545.3 million, according to figures presented during the handover.
Customs officers under Afeni also recorded 327 seizures with a combined Duty Paid Value of ₦14.75 billion. The seizures included 11,578 bags of foreign rice, petroleum products, cannabis and weapons.
The command also recorded 31,177 metric tonnes of export goods valued at ₦4.64 billion during the period.
Ibrahim, who takes over the Ogun I Command, pledged to maintain enforcement against smuggling and other forms of economic sabotage while strengthening cooperation with border communities and stakeholders.
Afeni later assumed office in Lagos as the 30th Acting Comptroller of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’, taking over from Comptroller Gambo Aliyu.
Aliyu's tenure produced 779 seizures valued at ₦13.08 billion, with the unit also reporting revenue performance of nearly 800 percent of its annual target.
Speaking after assuming office, Afeni promised to deepen intelligence-led enforcement, strengthen collaboration with other security agencies and give greater attention to the welfare of customs personnel.
The twin handovers mark a fresh change of leadership at two strategically important Customs formations responsible for revenue collection, trade facilitation and enforcement against smuggling.
