Police arrest suspected ₦2.5m fraudster, recover 25 ATM cards, phones

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old man, Tony Ameachi, over an alleged ₦2.5m fraud involving the purchase of deep freezers.
The suspect was arrested in the Ojo area of Lagos State on September 22, 2026, following an investigation that began in April after a complaint was lodged at the Igbesa Police Division.
The complainant, a deep-freezer dealer, had reportedly seen an online advertisement for the sale of the goods on April 1 and contacted the person behind the offer.
According to the police, following discussions, the woman transferred ₦2.5m into a bank account bearing the name Abdulmoruf Abdulahi for the purchase of the freezers for resale.
However, the goods were not delivered, while the person she had been communicating with allegedly stopped responding to her messages.
The matter was reported to the police on April 4, prompting detectives to commence an investigation, which eventually led to Ameachi's arrest in Lagos.
The police said a search conducted during the arrest led to the recovery of 25 Automated Teller Machine cards, 25 mobile phones and 16 Subscriber Identity Module cards.
Further investigation reportedly revealed that the suspect allegedly obtained utility bills and newly registered SIM cards from associates and directed them to use the documents to open different bank accounts.
The police alleged that Ameachi subsequently collected the ATM cards and used them for transactions connected with fraudulent activities.
The recovered phones, ATM cards and SIM cards are being examined by investigators to determine their connection with the case and establish whether they were used in other similar transactions.
The suspect, case file and recovered exhibits have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
The police said the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
