ABAKALIKI -- National Drug Law Enforcement Agency says it has dismantled an industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory in Ebonyi state and arrested a suspected Mexican national described as a “drug kingpin” in connection with the operation.
The agency said its operatives uncovered the clandestine laboratory during an intelligence-led operation in the state, where they also arrested several suspects linked to the production and distribution of illicit drugs.
NDLEA officials said the facility was equipped for the large-scale production of methamphetamine, a powerful and highly addictive synthetic stimulant that affects the central nervous system.
Methamphetamine can increase energy, alertness, heart rate and brain activity. Its misuse can lead to severe physical and psychological health problems, including addiction.
The agency said the operation was part of its ongoing efforts to dismantle clandestine drug laboratories and disrupt the networks involved in the production and trafficking of synthetic drugs in Nigeria.
According to the NDLEA, the suspected Mexican national was allegedly involved in the illicit drug operation and was taken into custody for further investigation.
The agency said exhibits recovered from the laboratory would be subjected to forensic examination, while investigations were continuing to identify other individuals connected to the facility.
NDLEA officials said those arrested would face prosecution after investigations are completed, in line with Nigeria's drug laws.
The agency has intensified operations against clandestine laboratories in recent years, particularly facilities involved in the production of methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs.
