Veteran actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacob dies at 84
Jacob, who hailed from Lufodo in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, reportedly passed away on Wednesday.
The Jacobs family announced his death in a statement released on Wednesday, signed by his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and his son, Olusoji Jacobs.
According to the family, the respected thespian died after a career spanning several decades in British television, international cinema, Nigerian theatre and Nollywood.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo. Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR). 11/07/1942 – 16/09/2026,” the family said.
The late actor was among the generation of Nigerian thespians who devoted decades to the development of professional theatre and acting in the country.
He built a career around the stage and screen, contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s dramatic arts at a time when theatre remained one of the major platforms for entertainment, cultural expression and social commentary.
As a veteran performer, Jacob was respected for his experience and longevity in the industry, having spent several decades practising the craft and working alongside other prominent names in Nigeria’s theatre tradition.
His death at 84 represents the passing of another member of a generation that played a significant role in laying the foundation for the thriving Nigerian film and entertainment industry of today.
Jacob’s roots in Lufodo also connect him to Ogun State, a state renowned for producing several prominent figures in Nigeria’s literary, theatrical and creative industries.
Tributes are expected to continue to pour in from fellow practitioners, friends, associates and members of his community as details of his funeral arrangements emerge.
The circumstances surrounding his death had yet to be made public as of the time of filing this report.
