Economic hardship to trigger voter backlash against APC, says Ogun PDP candidate

A Peoples Democratic Party candidate in Ogun State has predicted a voter backlash against the ruling All Progressives Congress, arguing that economic hardship and poor governance have eroded its support ahead of the elections.

Adeoye Adewale Adeniran, the PDP candidate for Abeokuta South State Constituency II, made the claim during an appearance on the Abeokuta-based podcast The Arena on Friday.

Adeniran, popularly known as “A3”, said rising inflation, higher petrol prices, exchange-rate pressures and increased construction costs had left residents dissatisfied with the government.

“You are in Nigeria; you see what is happening all over the place,” he said, questioning whether residents were still paying the same prices for petrol, building materials and foreign exchange as they did several years ago.

“The ruling party has nothing left to sell to the people,” Adeniran added, saying voters were “completely tired” of the APC.

He also dismissed concerns that the ruling party could retain power through financial inducements during the elections, arguing that voters could accept campaign money without necessarily voting for the party offering it.

“Ogun State people will collect their money and still vote against them,” he said.

The PDP candidate also criticised the performance of the Ogun State House of Assembly, describing the current legislature as “dormant and inactive”.

Adeniran said he had already prepared six proposed bills ahead of his possible election, including an Accountability and Forensic Accounting Bill which he said would help unlock more than ₦10 billion in unaccessed SUBEB funds.

He said his legislative ambition formed part of a broader political journey that could eventually lead to a governorship bid, while citing his grassroots activities and philanthropic work through the Adewale Adeniran Foundation.

With campaigns gathering momentum ahead of the elections, Adeniran said the PDP was united and positioned to defeat the APC in Ogun State.
